Library Shipping Tool

The Library Shipping Tool is a dedicated platform that enables libraries across Canada to access affordable shipping rates for interlibrary loans and material exchanges. This service facilitates the efficient sharing of resources, enhancing collaboration, and access to diverse collections nationwide.

Purpose

The tool aims to:

  • Provide Cost-Effective Shipping: Offer libraries discounted rates for sending materials, reducing operational expenses
  • Enhance Resource Sharing: Support the seamless exchange of books and other materials between libraries, broadening access for patrons
  • Streamline Logistics: Simplify the process of shipping library materials through an easy-to-use online platform

History

Initially administered by the Canadian Library Association (CLA), the Library Materials Shipping Tool was a vital resource for libraries nationwide.

Following the dissolution of the CLA, CULC assumed responsibility for the tool’s administration. CULC has since developed a dedicated website, LibraryShippingTool.ca, to host the service and provide related information and updates.

Process

Libraries can utilize the tool by:

  1. Accessing the Platform: Visit LibraryShippingTool.ca and click on “Ship Now” to begin
  2. Creating an Account:
    • Existing Users: Libraries previously registered with the CLA should update their records by contacting CULC directly
    • New Users: Libraries new to the service can apply by filling out the application form
  3. Generating Shipping Labels: Use the tool to create shipping labels at discounted rates for sending materials to other libraries
